Description

The Giza Plateau, nestled on the outskirts of Cairo, is a captivating destination that transports you back in time to the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, approximately 4,500 years ago. Here, you will find the illustrious Giza Necropolis, home to the sole survivors of the seven wonders of the ancient world—the Great Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, along with the enigmatic Sphinx. This sprawling site also encompasses several cemeteries, a workers' village, and an industrial complex, making it Cairo's most popular attraction, drawing thousands of visitors every year.

  1. The Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu): Standing as the oldest pyramid in Giza and the largest in Egypt, Khufu's Great Pyramid once soared to an impressive height of 146 meters upon its completion around 2570 BC. It is a testament to the incredible engineering prowess of the ancient Egyptians.
  2. Pyramid of Chephren (Khafre): The Pyramid of Chephren, the second-tallest and second-largest of the Giza Pyramids, serves as the final resting place for the Fourth-Dynasty pharaoh Khafre (also known as Chefren). This majestic structure was constructed during his reign, which spanned from approximately 2558 to 2532 BC.
  3. Pyramid of Menkaure (Mycerinus): The Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest among the main pyramids in Giza, stands as a testament to the splendor of the Fourth Dynasty. This pyramid is believed to be the final resting place of the Egyptian Pharaoh Menkaure.
  4. The Great Sphinx: Carved from a single piece of stone, the Great Sphinx is one of the most iconic and legendary statues in the world. This remarkable monument, with the body of a lion and the face of a man, stretches an impressive 70 meters in length and reaches a height of 20 meters. Its face bears a striking resemblance to that of King Kephren, adding to its mystique.

The Giza Plateau is not only home to these breathtaking wonders but also houses the renowned Museum of Egyptian Antiquities. Commonly known as the Egyptian Museum or Cairo Museum, this grand institution is a treasure trove of ancient Egyptian artifacts, boasting an extensive collection of 120,000 items, with a representative selection on display for visitors to admire.

Beyond the Giza Plateau, your journey through ancient Egypt takes you to the captivating Valley of the Kings—a sacred burial ground for the Pharaohs of the 18th to 20th dynasties. Marvel at the intricately decorated tombs of legendary rulers such as Tutankhamun, Tutmosis I and III, Ramses VI, Amenhotep II, and Merenptah. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to explore three tombs, subject to their availability at the time.

Delve deeper into history with a visit to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, also known as Deir el-Bahari Temple. This magnificent mortuary temple, situated on the West Bank of the Nile, honors the extraordinary Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled as Egypt's first known female pharaoh for approximately two decades. Admire the temple's awe-inspiring architecture and immerse yourself in the stories of this remarkable monarch.

Witness the colossal Colossi of Memnon, two imposing statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, standing tall on the West Bank of the Nile. These statues, dating back to the 14th century BC, offer a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Egypt's past.

Your adventure continues to the expansive Temple of Karnak, a monumental complex situated on the East Bank of the Nile. With its sprawling grounds spanning over 100 hectares, Karnak is often referred to as the largest open-air museum in the world. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of ancient Egyptian architecture as you explore its multiple temple buildings, each boasting impressive columns, hypostyle halls, and captivating inscriptions.

In the heart of the city on the East Bank of the Nile lies the magnificent Temple of Luxor. This remarkable temple, featuring the grand first pylon constructed by Ramses II, beckons you to admire its majestic beauty. Step back in time as you wander through its halls adorned with detailed reliefs, recounting tales of pharaonic victories and religious ceremonies.

Venturing further afield, you will encounter the Temple of Edfu, also known as the Temple of Horus. This extraordinary structure is dedicated to Horus, the avenging son of Isis and Osiris, and is located in the city of Edfu, approximately 109 kilometers from Luxor. Rediscovered in the 19th century, this temple stands as one of the best-preserved sites in Egypt, having been entirely buried under desert sands for centuries.

Continue your journey to the captivating Kom Ombo Temple, a truly unique sanctuary dedicated to two gods—Horus, the falcon god, and Sobek, the crocodile god. This extraordinary temple, built by Ptolemy VI, features duplicated courts, halls, sanctuaries, and rooms to accommodate both deities. Immerse yourself in the fascinating mythology and architectural grandeur of this dual temple.

As your exploration nears its end, visit the remarkable High Dam, a rock-fill dam located on the northern border between Egypt and Sudan. This engineering marvel, constructed between 1960 and 1968, plays a vital role in protecting Egypt from annual Nile floods. Standing 111 meters high, with a length of 3,830 meters and a base width of 980 meters, the High Dam remains a testament to human ingenuity.

Finally, immerse yourself in the captivating Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis. Originally located on Philae Island, the temple was relocated to Agilika Island following the construction of the High Dam to preserve it from flooding. Discover the intriguing mythology surrounding Isis, her beloved husband, Osiris, and the birth of their son, Horus, as you explore this ancient temple.

The Giza Plateau and its surrounding sites offer a mesmerizing journey through Egypt's ancient history. From the awe-inspiring pyramids and Sphinx to the grand temples, each step unveils the remarkable achievements of this civilization. Prepare to be captivated by the legacy of the pharaohs as you embark on this unforgettable adventure.
